10 Effective Strategies I’ve Used to Overcome Creative Blocks

Creative blocks can be frustrating for anyone. Although it can feel helpless when you’re in the thick of it, you can help shift your energy. Here are 10 of many strategies I have tried over the years to create a more hospitable environment for creating.
1. Take a break and go for a walk outside.
Going for a walk outside can be a great way to clear your mind and get some fresh air. It can also be a good opportunity to stretch your legs, take some deep breaths and get some exercise. Whether it’s a quick stroll or a longer nature walk, there are numerous benefits to being outside.
Research has shown that spending time in nature can improve your mood, reduce stress levels, and boost your immune system. Walking can also help improve cardiovascular health, strengthen bones and muscles, and lead to better sleep. Although immersing yourself in a nature walk does wonders, don’t overlook a quick stroll around the block. Just be sure to observe a couple of trees along the way, if possible.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or just need a break from work or daily life, consider taking a walk outside. Even a few minutes of fresh air and movement can make a big difference in how you feel.
2. Listen to music that inspires you.
Music can be a powerful tool to uplift, motivate, and inspire us. It can help us tap into our emotions and find the energy we need to get back into the flow.
If you’re feeling stuck, stressed, or unmotivated, take a few minutes to plug into music that speaks to you. Maybe it’s an album that you loved as a teenager, or a playlist of your favorite songs from different genres. Whatever it is, make sure it’s something that makes you feel good and helps you connect with your inner self.
Let yourself get lost in the rhythm and allow the music to take you on a journey. You may find that as you listen, you start to feel more energized, focused, and inspired.
The next time you’re in need of a pick-me-up, don’t underestimate the power of music. Put on your favorite tunes and let yourself be transported to a world of creativity, inspiration, and positivity.
3. Try a different artistic medium.
Have you ever considered trying a new artistic medium? Sometimes it can be refreshing to step outside of your comfort zone and explore new forms of expression. If you’re used to painting, try sculpting or printmaking. If you’re a writer, try your hand at photography or music composition. It will add variety to your creative work and can also provide new inspiration and a sense of accomplishment. Give it a try and, who knows, you might just discover a new passion!
4. Take a nap or get a good night’s sleep.
Getting enough sleep is essential for maintaining good physical and mental health. Although it’s recommended that adults aim for 7–9 hours of sleep per night, I personally rarely get over 6 hours. I know, I know…I’m working on it.
Sometimes life can get in the way and make it difficult to get enough rest. If you find yourself feeling drowsy or unproductive during the day, recharge by taking a nap. A nap can improve your mood, increase alertness, and boost your cognitive function. I have actually just rested my head at my desk, barely losing consciousness. After just a few minutes, I’m recharged and ready for the rest of the day. A little power nap, if you will.
If you’re consistently struggling to get enough sleep at night, however, you may want to evaluate your sleep habits. I know I need to make some changes to ensure I’m getting the rest I need. Creating a relaxing sleep environment, and limiting caffeine and alcohol consumption before bed can do wonders. By prioritizing sleep, you’ll be better equipped to handle whatever challenges life throws your way.
5. Read an inspiring book.
Reading can help us expand our knowledge, enrich our vocabulary, and even improve our mental health. Whether it’s a novel, biography or memoir, reading can give us the motivational boost we need.
When it comes to choosing a book that will inspire you, pick something that resonates with your interests and passions. Whether you are into biographies, self-help, or fiction, there is a book out there that will speak to you and help you tap into your inner creativity and motivation.
One of the great things about reading is that it allows us to explore new ideas and perspectives, and can even help us develop new skills and talents. So, if you are feeling stuck or in need of a little inspiration, pick up a book and let yourself be transported to a world of new ideas and possibilities. Who knows — you might just discover a new passion or interest that will change your life forever. A little caveat here, though: if you’re feeling sleepy, you might want to skip reading for now.
6. Write in a journal to clear your mind.
Journaling is a therapeutic practice that can help clear your mind and improve your mental well-being. Writing down your thoughts and feelings in a journal can help you gain clarity and perspective on the things that are troubling you. It can also be a great way to process your emotions and work through difficult situations, which can sometimes be the cause of the creative block.
There are many different ways to approach journaling, so it’s important to find a method that works for you. Some people like to write in a journal every day, while others prefer to write only when they feel the need to. Some people like to write about a specific topic, while others prefer to write about whatever comes to mind. One way I’m trying right now is funnel journaling: the beginning section is a “dump” of whatever is on your mind, then write down a few gratitudes (I do three), and finally, write (three again) my intentions for the day.
No matter how you choose to journal, the important thing is to be honest and authentic in your writing. Don’t worry about grammar, spelling, or legibility — just let your thoughts flow onto the page. You might be surprised at how much clarity and insight you can gain from the simple act of putting pen to paper.
Writing in a journal to clear your mind just might be the thing you need to feel more centered and grounded.
7. Exercise to release endorphins.
Exercise is one of the best ways to release endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Whether it’s jogging, cycling, dancing, swimming, or any other form of physical activity, exercise can help improve mood, reduce stress, and boost overall wellbeing.
Regular exercise has been shown to have a positive impact on mental health, as it can help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety. Additionally, exercise can improve cognitive function, promote better sleep, and even enhance self-esteem.
So if you’re feeling down or stressed out, consider incorporating some form of exercise into your daily routine. You don’t have to be a fitness enthusiast to reap the benefits of physical activity. Even a brisk walk around the block, 10 minutes on a treadmill or recumbent bike can help improve your mood and leave you feeling refreshed and energized.
8. Take a shower or bath to relax.
Taking a shower or bath is an excellent way to relax after a long, stressful day. It helps to wash away the dirt and grime of the day and leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
When you take a shower or bath, the warm water helps to soothe tired muscles, improve circulation, and reduce tension. It can also help to clear your mind and relieve stress and anxiety.
To make the most of your shower or bath, try adding some essential oils or bath salts to the water. Lavender, chamomile, and eucalyptus are all great options for relaxation. You can also light some candles or play some soft music to create a peaceful atmosphere.
Remember to take your time and enjoy the experience. Allow yourself to fully unwind and let go of any stress or worries. Taking a shower or bath is a simple but effective way to take care of yourself and improve your overall well-being.
9. Watch a movie or TV show that inspires you.
There are times when we feel uninspired, and we don’t know what to do to get out of the rut. Whether it’s a classic or a new release, a drama or a comedy, watching something that resonates with us can help us find our spark again.
When we watch a movie or TV show, we often get lost in the story and the characters. We become invested in their struggles, their triumphs, and their growth, start to see ourselves in them, and begin to imagine what we could do if we were in their shoes. It is a way we get inspired to be better, to do more, and to dream bigger.
So, if you’re feeling down or stuck, take some time to watch a movie or TV show that inspires you. You never know what kind of ideas or motivation it might spark within you. And who knows, it might even lead to your own success story.
10. Meditate or practice mindfulness.
Meditation and mindfulness are powerful tools for improving mental and emotional well-being. By taking a few minutes each day to sit and focus on your breath, you can quiet your mind and reduce stress and anxiety. Mindfulness involves being present in the moment and paying attention to your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without judgment.
By practicing mindfulness, you can learn to respond to situations in a more calm, thoughtful and creative manner. Whether you choose to meditate or practice mindfulness, creating a daily routine can have a profound impact on your overall health and happiness.
Feeling stuck in a creative rut can be frustrating, but there are things you can do to move through it. The important thing to remember is not to push too hard. Putting more pressure on yourself to produce is often counter-productive and will only make the situation worse. Give yourself some time, try some of these strategies, and see if they help. You may be pleasantly surprised to find they help shift your energy, stimulate your creativity and get you back on track.
